Luxtram has inaugurated the second phase of its network, opening three new tram stops in Luxembourg City.
On July 27, François Bausch, Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure; Lydie Polfer, Mayor of Luxembourg City; and Patrick Goldschmidt, who is responsible for mobility, attended the opening of the three new stations: Theater, Faïencerie and Stäreplaz-Etoile.
The first phase of the Luxtram system between LuxExpo and Pont Rouge opened in December last year. The three new stops, which will take the total number to 11, will link the city centre with the Kirchberg plateau.
Passengers will be able to travel for free from LuxExpo to the new Stäreplaz-Etoile station until September 16.
Nine trams will operate on the Luxexpo – Stäreplaz-Etoile section of the route, according to Luxtram. Supplied by CAF, the trams use a ground-based power supply system on the new section.
The opening comes a few weeks before Schueberfouer – the annual Luxembourg City funfair. In June, Luxtram said that, for safety reasons, trams would be limited to 20 km/h and will only use one line while the event is being held.
