Los Angeles County’s metro transport authority (Metro) has approved a $6.1 billion budget for the next fiscal year.

The budget includes more than $2.2 billion for capital projects – including the construction of the Regional Connector light rail corridor through Downtown LA – as well as $1.7 billion for bus and rail operations.

No fare rises have been planned but Metro will focus on maintaining its fleet, rail lines, stations and facilities while adding carriages to meet the growing demand on the Expo and Gold lines.

Compared to the 2017 fiscal year budget, the 2018 statement has been increased by 1.45 per cent.

Metro board chairman John Fasana said: “Through an aggressive transportation initiative focused on construction, bus and rail operations and making sure our system is in a state of good repair to maintain and protect our assets, we are working diligently to anticipate long term transportation needs.”

The announcement of the budget – which runs from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018 – was made on May 30 following the board of directors’ approval and feedback from the public.
