[Sponsored] UKTI Yorkshire and the Humber will lead a trade mission to Germany next month to try and forge new relationships between the UK rail supply chain and Deutsche Bahn (DB).
The mission will look to establish valuable trade links with the German rail market – the largest single overseas market for UK rail supply companies.
By 2017, DB is expected to invest €32 billion, spending roughly two thirds on its infrastructure and a third on traction and rolling stock.
Although Germany is one of the top export markets for the Yorkshire and Humber region, the German rail sector has traditionally been a challenging market for suppliers to crack. But some British companies have made the break through.
Over the past couple of years, National Express, which is headquartered in Birmingham, has won a series of operating contracts for regional rail services in Germany. From December 2018, the company will also take over from DB as the operator of the Nuremberg S-Bahn.
The UK rail industry has been challenged to follow National Express’ lead and increase exports to take advantage of the global growth in rail. Launching its industry strategy earlier this month, the Rail Supply Group (RSG) estimated international growth at 2.7 per cent a year, making the industry worth £128 billion by 2019.
The trade mission will be an opportunity to:
- Take advantage of the huge potential for UK rail supply businesses within the Northern Powerhouse to establish a position within the German railway sector;
- Meet with companies already well embedded within the German supply chain, supplying to DB and others, with the aim of pairing NPH businesses with counterparts in Germany where new technologies and efficiencies can be demonstrated on a one-one basis;
- Meet the DB decision makers and experts from the global rail network;
- Get ahead and learn how to improve your product and corporate strategy;
- Visit Berlin to meet Deutsche Bahn and travel on to two other rail hub cities to meet with businesses embedded in Deutsche Bahn’s supply chain.
