Look inside the new Caledonian Sleeper car

Listen to this article

Serco Caledonian Sleeper has revealed a mock-up interior of the new carriages it will bring into service in 2018.

Peter Strachan, managing director of Caledonian Sleeper, said the life-size model will allow people to “get a real feel for what will be a new standard of overnight travDoublebedsideviewel between Scotland and London”.

Built by Spanish manufacturer CAF, the new sleeper carriages will introduce hotel-style key cards and will feature improved phone charging facilities and Wi-Fi. Some of the new rooms will also have en-suite toilets and showers.

The mock-up was unveiled by Scotland’s Transport Minister, Humza Yousaf MSP, at an industrial estate in Broxburn, near Edinburgh. Feedback from visitors will be used to inform the final design of the new carriages.

The new Caledonian Sleeper franchise is investing £150 million in 75 new carriages. Due to enter passenger service in April 2018, the carriages will include a mixture of cradle seats, pod flatbeds, berths and a “brasserie-style Club Car”.
