Indian Railways: Passenger and freight revenue up

Passenger and freight revenue have both increased in the first eight months of this financial year, Indian Railways has announced.

Revenue rose to $14.49 billion between April and November 2012 compared to $12.15 billion in the same period last year.

Freight earnings also increased to $10.01 billion, recording a rise of 24 per cent from 2011.

Railways carried 647.11 million tonnes of freight traffic during April-November 2012 compared to 618.05 million tonnes of freight transported in the same period last year.

Earning from passengers during the first 10-month period recorded a growth of 8.97 per cent to $3.75 billion, having posted $3.44 billion in 2011.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the numbers of passengers rose to 2.9 billion and 2.7 billion respectively, an increase of 2.72 per cent and 3.96 per cent.
