Indian Railways launches real time train information service

Indian Railways has implemented a new real time train information service (RTIS).

The RTIS service named Simran has been jointly developed by Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur.

Minister of Railways, Dinesh Trivedi inaugurated this new service facility during the Economic Editor’s Conference.

The system has been developed and is ‘working successfully in a number of trains’.

In the current system, train information is disseminated through 139, which is dependent on manual collection and feeding of train running information has certain limitations, so Indian Railways decided to develop GPS based train tracking system, the Railway Ministry said.

The trains for which the information will be available to the public to start with include the 12301 Howrah – New Delhi Rajdhani, 12302 New Delhi – Howrah Rajdhani, 12313 Sealdah – New Delhi Rajdhani, 12951 Mumbai Centra l- New Delhi Rajdhani and 12004 New Delh i- Lucknow Shatabdi.

The system will provide the public and passengers with information such as train location, running position (whether it is running on time or late and by how much), and location with respect to the next stop in terms of kilometres.

Passengers may also get the train information through SMS by sending a text message “<train number>” to 09415 139139.

The Ministry of Railways plans to implement RTIS to track all trains, passenger as well as freight trains.

For this, a work has been approved in Railway Budget 2011 at a cost of Rs. 110.0 crore. The project is likely to be completed by December 2012.
