MTA has banned hoverboards on its trains and at its stations over concerns about their safety.
New York’s transport authority said the miniature swegway boards were now prohibited on New York City Subway, New York City Buses, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad and Staten Island Railway services.
MTA said the hoverboards broke two sets of rules prohibiting personal wheeled vehicles and restrictions on customers possessing potentially hazardous or flammable materials.
Regulators in the US only recently issued an alert after reports of the lithium batteries inside hoverboards catching fire and exploding.
Hoverboards have already been banned by Amtrak and several regional rail operators in the USA.
MTA chief safety officer David Mayer said: “The safety of our customers and employees is always our top concern.
“For obvious reasons, it is not safe to use hoverboards, skateboards or other personal wheeled vehicles on station platforms. We’re equally concerned about the safety risk of bringing devices that pose fire hazards into the confined spaces inside trains and buses.”
Brilliant idea. TfL along with London Underground could also start banning hoverboards aswell London Overground to also ban hoverboards with TfL to ban hoverboards on the DLR, Croydon Tramlink, Crossrail (TfL Rail) and a ban on hoverboards in certain locations in Central London. And other cities will soon follow to ban hoverboards on public transport and metro system.
