High-speed services launched on LGV Est

Listen to this article

High-speed TGV services have begun along the full route of the LGV Est between Paris and Strasbourg.

Phase two of the line between Baudrecourt and Vendenheim was completed in March last year. The 106-kilometre line was due to open in April, but a derailment during testing, which killed 11 people, delayed the launch until July 3.

Sixteen trains will make the return journey from Paris to Strasbourg every day. The journey now takes less than two hours.

Phase one of the line was completed in 2007.

By 2020, SNCF expects 12.8 million to used the route each year – compared to 12 million today.
