Figures released by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) show that rail passenger journeys in Great Britain have more than doubled in the past 20 years.
Passenger journeys across England, Scotland and Wales increased by 4.5 per cent in 2014-15, from 1.3 billion to 1.4 billion – more than double the 589.5 million recorded in 1995-96.
All 11 regions reported an annual increase, with Scotland experiencing the most sizeable growth, 8.7 per cent.
Passenger journeys in London rose by six per cent to 492.2 million on the previous year.
