Barcelona’s L9 South metro, the longest automated metro in Europe, opened its doors on February 12.
The 20-kilometre L9 South includes 15 new stations and will allow passengers to travel from the University of Barcelona to Barcelona-El Prat Airport in just over half an hour.
The opening follows an extensive period of testing.
A central section will eventually link L9 South with the existing L9 route between Can Zam and Sagrera stations.
Announcing the opening, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) said L9 South will operate at the “highest grade of automation”, which means that all aspects of the operation, including emergencies, are automated.
Estimated to have cost around €2.9 billion, L9 South is expected to record 23 million annual passenger journeys.
