Fresh state funding for Muni Metro fleet renewal

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has been awarded $45 million by the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) to help fund its new fleet of Siemens-built Muni Metro trains.

Altogether SFMTA has ordered 215 LRVs from Siemens and retains the option for 45 more units. The cap-and-trade funds equate to 10 light rail vehicles (LRVs).

SFMTA says it now has the funding for the 151 vehicles needed to replace the current LRV fleet and 42 of the 64 additional units.

The first four LRVs are currently being built in Sacramento and will be delivered by the end of the year before going into passenger service in 2017.

SFMTA says the new fleet will be much more reliable than its existing LRVs, in part because they will use new Siemens diagnostic and monitoring software.
