A Fluor-led consortium has been awarded the design-build contract for the $2 billion Purple Line Light Rail Project in the northern suburbs of Washington DC.

The Purple Line Transit Partners consortium, which includes Fluor Enterprises, Meridiam and Star America Fund, will finance, design, build, operate and maintain the line between Carrollton in Prince George’s County and Bethesda in Montgomery County.

Atkins North America has been appointed as the lead designer for the 26-kilometre corridor.

Construction is expected to begin late this year, with the first commercial services slated for 2022.

Once complete, Purple Line Transit Operators – Fluor Enterprises, Alternate Concepts and CAF USA, will operate and maintain the route for a period of 30 years.
