Over 50 volunteers joined First Capital Connect at Flitwick Station last week to help complete a new station garden project.

Volunteers included a collection of local businesses, the gardening club at Flitwick Lower School, and young footballers from the Luton Town Football Club apprenticeship scheme.

The new garden features include a wild meadow situated at the station entrance, oak planters on platforms 2/3 and a large shrubbery on the side of platform 4.

The event started at 10am with an opening speech from Keith Jipps, FCC’s Customer Services Director.

The volunteers then got to work by laying out the wild meadow turf whilst staff from FCC and their cleaning contractors, Initial, worked on the shrubbery at platform 4.

A buffet lunch was laid on for the volunteers courtesy of the local Waitrose and Tescos.

Donations were made by a number of local businesses, including Center Parcs who donated the entire wild meadow turf and will be opening a new resort in Woburn, Bedfordshire, in 2013.

Keith Jipps, FCC’s Customer Service Director, said:

“The new station garden was a huge undertaking which would not have been possible were it not for the volunteers who turned up on the day. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work.

“The final result looks fantastic and provides an improved travelling experience for our customers”.
