Two FirstGroup employees have raised more than £2,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support after taking on the London Triathlon last month.

The pair were given a helping hand by First’s Charity and Sponsorship Committee which awarded them £1,500.

Aberdeen based Alex Fenwick (26), an Internal Communications Manager at FirstGroup and Gary Miller (34), Internal Audit Manager from Liverpool, decided to take on the triathlon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support having both experienced the effects cancer has had on members of their family.

The Olympic distance triathlon consisted of a 1500m swim followed by a 40km bike ride and 10km run. If completing the event was not enough of a challenge, Gary was unable to swim further than a single length when he signed up for the event.

After months of hard training the pair completed the course, crossing the line together in 2h 54m, 30 minutes ahead of their expectations.

Speaking after the event, Alex said: “The triathlon was really tough, but great fun. I’m delighted that we have raised so much money for a really worthwhile cause – having FirstGroup’s Charity and Sponsorship Committee support us was a tremendous boost.”

Meanwhile, Gary added: “Having recently lost a member of family to cancer, I wanted to take part in something that would a lot of money for this fantastic cause.

“Completing the swim stage of the triathlon was probably the toughest part for me having only recently learned to swim properly.

“Both Alex and I were extremely happy with our time and are pleased that the money will help a fantastic cause.”

Alex and Gary were awarded funding by FirstGroup’s Charity and Sponsorship Committee. The Committee comprises 12 members of staff based throughout Britain and considers requests for funding and gifts from groups and organisations across the country.

It aims to provide charitable support in line with three specific criteria – young people, health and the environment. For further information on the Committee please visit the website.
