First X’Trapolis commuter train arrives in South Africa

Listen to this article

The first of 600 X’Trapolis Mega commuter trains for PRASA has arrived in South Africa.

Delivered to PRASA’s Wolmerton depot in Pretoria from Brazil, the first completed unit will now begin a period of dynamic testing.

Testing will look at the performance of traction and braking systems as well as gauge checking, journey times and other system tests.

The first 20 six-car trains are being built in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, before the production line is moved to South Africa.

The second train of the order is due to arrive early next year.

Gibela – a joint venture between Alstom, Ubumbano Rail and New Africa Rail – is leading the project.
