The first trains for Bangkok’s Purple Line have been shipped from Yokohama City in Japan.
The trains are being supplied by JR East’s Japan Transport Engineering Company as part of a consortium which is constructing the new line.
CK, Marubeni Corporation and Toshiba Corporation are supplying the power systems, signalling and control systems for the 23-kilometre metro line.
The first two of 21 trainsets were shipped from Daikoku Pier at Yokohama Port on September 7. All 63 metro cars are expected to be in Thailand by January 2016.
Set to open in 2016, the line, which is being delivered by the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) under a public-private partnership (PPP), will connect Bang Yai to Bang Sue in Bangkok.
