Hitachi Rail, formerly Ansaldo Breda, has completed the first of 20 driverless metro vehicles for a new elevated rail network in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The body shells for the four-car train were built in Reggio Calabria, Italy, before being shipped to Hitachi’s factory in Pittsburg to be fitted out.
The Ansaldo Honolulu joint venture was awarded the contract to build the city’s metro system in 2011 by the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART). Completing the first train is a significant milestone for the project, which has experienced a number of delays.
In January, HART announced that it had completed around 25 per cent of the elevated guideway.
