The very first freight train to travel the length of the Gotthard Base Tunnel completed its inaugural run on January 16.
It marks another milestone in the testing of the world’s longest rail tunnel, which began in October last year. By the time the test phase is complete in May this year, around 3,500 runs will have been carried out.
The trial run at the weekend included rolling motorway vehicles. Engineers looked at the behaviour of the rolling stock and cargo as it made its way through the tunnel.
Over the next few weeks, further tests will look at driving dynamics and journey times.
