First BART ‘Fleet of the Future’ train car to make cross-country trek

Listen to this article

The first of San Francisco’s ‘Fleet of the Future’ train cars is due to make the 4,800-kilometre journey from Plattsburgh, New York, to California.

Car 3001 will be transported by flatbed truck next month to a test track in Hayward to begin dynamic testing.

Bombardier aims to deliver the first complete pre-series, 10-car train by March 2016.

When testing is complete and the final design approved, production vehicles will start to arrive in 2017. In total, Bombardier will supply 775 new cars by 2021, allowing BART to retire older stock.

Fleet for the Future trains feature micro-plug doors and an air cooling system.
