Fatal crash in the Netherlands

Listen to this article

A fatal crash has blocked the railway between Ommen and Dalfsen in the Netherlands.

Reports state that an Arriva train struck a slow-moving crane on a level crossing near Zwolle, north east of Amsterdam, just before 09:00 this morning.

On its website, infrastructure operator ProRail confirmed that the driver of the train had been killed, while twitter reports state that two people were taken to hospital and a further five released to go home after treatment at the site.

Early reports indicate that the crane waited at the level crossing for a train to pass, then proceeded to cross when it was struck by a second train.

The train derailed completely in the accident, ending up on its side.  Accident investigators will have to examine the wreckage before the line can be cleared, so the line is due to be closed for some time.
