Dubai’s Red metro line is to be extended to the site of the 2020 World Expo in a recently announced €2.6 billion network upgrade.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a contract with the Expolink consortium of Alstom, Acciona and Gulermak to design and build the extension.
The project, which is known as Route 2020, is for the construction of a 15-kilometre-long metro line which will branch off the existing Red line at the Nakheel Harbour & Tower station. 11.8km of the new line will be elevated and 3.2km underground.
The new extension will have seven stations, including an interchange at Nakheel Harbour and an “iconic” station at the World Expo site.
Alstom will supply 50 five-car Metropolis trains for the new line. The company will also supply and integrate the power supply, communications, automatic fare control, track works and platform screen doors.
The existing Red line will receive upgraded power supplies, signalling and telecommunications and modifications to the track.
