The excavation of a single-bore, two-kilometre rail tunnel has been completed in Vancouver as part of the Evergreen line automated rapid transit extension.
Described as the most complex part of the $1.43 billion SkyTrain extension, the tunnel links Port Moody and Coquitlam.
The Evergreen line is now 75 per cent complete and once open, the extension will once again make the SkyTrain the longest-fully automated rapid transit system in the world, overtaking the Dubai Metro – at least for the time being.
Seven new stations are being built along the Evergreen line – all of which are in the latter stages of construction.
Tunnel fit-out works are expected to continue until next summer. Following a period of testing, the new line will open early 2017.
