EBRD issues loan to upgrade Kosovo’s rail network

Infrakos, Kosovo’s rail infrastructure manager, has agreed a €39.9 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The loan will fund the upgrade of Rail Route 10 – Kosovo’s only international rail line, improving its connection to several core European rail corridors.

The modernisation will be divided into phases across the southern section, between Fushë Kosovë and the FYR Macedonian border, the central section, between Fushë Kosovë and Mitrovicë, and the northern section, between Mitrovicë and the Serbian border, of the line.

The loan, the first to be issued by the EBRD to Kosovo’s transport sector, is backed up by funding from the European Investment Bank and EU grants.

EBRD First Vice President Phil Bennett said: “A well-developed and modern transport infrastructure is critical for achieving sustainable economic growth. We are proud to have Kosovo’s Rail Route 10 as our first transport project in the country.

“The rehabilitation of Kosovo’s only international rail link is vital for the country’s further integration into regional and international markets. Improved transport links will greatly contribute to enhanced regional and pan-European trade and cooperation.”
