Transport for NSW has appointed Downer EDI as the managing contractor for the Newcastle Light Rail project.
Downer will work with the authority to design, build and commission the 2.7-kilometre system.
Due to open in 2019, the project includes six stops, stabling and maintenance facilities and other associated infrastructure works.
Downer chief executive Grant Fenn said: “Downer works closely with Transport for NSW and we look forward to helping them deliver this signature project for Newcastle and to contribute to the revitalisation of the State’s second largest city.”
Announcing the contract award, Transport for NSW also announced several changes to the design of the system, removing sections of raised track, altering the alignment at Worth Place and adding a second track across Stewart Avenue.
