Deutsche Bahn (DB) has awarded Caverion a €19 million contract to supply the building systems and provide technical maintenance services for Germany’s first carbon neutral ICE train depot.
Caverion will be responsible for the €220 million facility’s heating and sanitation, ventilation and air conditioning, cooling and automation systems.
Once the site is operational in May 2017, Caverion will provide technical maintenance for the depot, which will service DB’s high-speed ICE trains, including the new ICE 4 fleet.
The 230,000-square-metre ICE depot, which is being constructed in Nippes, Cologne, will be the first in Germany to run entirely on renewal energy, says DB. This will be made possible by 1,200 solar panels, generating 300 megawatt hours of electricity per year.
DB has said that if the site requires more energy than the solar panels can produce, it will purchase renewable energy from elsewhere.
Werner Kühn, executive vice-president and chief executive of Caverion Germany, said: “This project is demanding and requires very reliable and exact planning due to the very short project period and the huge size of the construction site.”
