Council pushes for direct Clapham to Heathrow rail link

Listen to this article

A transport consultancy is set to be appointed by Wandsworth Council with the task of developing the business case for a direct rail link connecting Clapham Junction and Heathrow.

If given the go ahead it is hoped that a journey of around 30 minutes will be possible, which would avoid the need for south Londoners to travel north into London in order to catch a connecting train from Paddington or a Piccadilly line service.

The last Heathrow rail scheme – called Airtrack and which was spearheaded by BAA – was abandoned in 2011.

Early discussions have proved encouraging and show that there is broad support for improved rail access to the airport.

  1. Airtrack has died a death and will not be resuscitated until the level crossings between Barnes and Feltham are eliminated, or substituted by bridges/underpasses.
