Contracts awarded for Caltrain electrification project

Caltrain has awarded the infrastructure and rolling stock contracts to electrify the railway between San Francisco and San Jose.

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure will deliver the infrastructure for the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project (PCEP) while the US subsidiary of Swiss manufacturer Stadler will supply 96 electric multiple units (EMUs).

The Caltrain Board of Directors has now approved the $1.25 billion contracts, which will replace the majority of the line’s diesel fleet with electric trains.

Electric passenger rail services are due to begin in 2020.

Jim Hartnett, Caltrain’s executive director, said: “The award of these contracts marks an important milestone in Caltrain’s 150 year history.

“The Caltrain Modernization Program is the most transformative project this corridor has ever undertaken.  It offers  unique economic, environmental and mobility benefits to the region and it is a key link in a High Speed Rail network that will transform the way we think about transportation in California.”
