Dutch construction firm Strukton has announced it has been chosen to design and construct a locomotive workshop and the surrounding infrastructure for locomotive leasing company Mitsui Rail Capital Europe (MRCE) and Siemens in Rotterdam.

In March, Mitsui and Siemens announced their intention to form a 50-50 joint venture (JV) and build the depot. This JV will be called Locomotive Workshop Rotterdam and be headquartered in Rotterdam.

A spokesperson for Strukton said that its local presence and experience in the fields of road and rail infrastructure, buildings and rolling stock and from operating depots gave it the advantage over competitors.

Locomotive Workshop Rotterdam is expected to be established in the next few months with the depot opening in the summer of 2019.

It will maintain and service Siemens’ Vectron locomotives as well as third-party fleets. This includes inspections, preventive and corrective maintenance work.

Rotterdam is the biggest seaport in Europe and is a key logistics hub on the continent’s rail network.

According to Strukton, there are more than 250 intermodal rail connections in the port each week. Siemens and Mitsui want to capitalise on this traffic to make the depot a major service hub.
