A $100 million restoration of Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station has celebrated a milestone after awarding the contract to Australian construction firm Built Pty.
The Victorian state government said work will soon begin “fixing the leaky roof, restoring the crumbling façade and re-painting the more than 100 year-old building”.
The refurbished Flinders Street will feature an extended concourse, new entrances, new passenger information boards, improved ticketing facilities and new toilets.
The main entrance on Swanston Street will also be redesigned to improve access.
Premier Daniel Andrews said: “Flinders Street is at the heart of our train system and our city – it’s an icon of Melbourne and it’s time to give it the attention it deserves.
“Our practical project will fix Flinders Street Station – restoring the crumbling building, fixing the leaks, and making the station more functional for the 200,000 passengers that use it every day.”
Work is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
