The main construction phase of a 7.3-kilometre extension of the Gold Coast Light Rail network is to begin next month.
Queensland’s state government announced that work will begin on Stage 2 of the network in July, having successfully completed initial site investigations.
Minister for Transport Stirling Hinchliffe said: “Since the Queensland Government and GoldLinQ finalised project documents on 28 April 2016, GoldLinQ’s construction contractor CPB Contractors have worked hard on the detailed design and approvals process and will start construction early next month.
“Stage 2 will link the tram to the train and transform the Gold Coast, improving connectivity between Brisbane and the Gold Coast and delivering significant economic benefits and job opportunities for the region.”
The twin-track, 7.3-kilometre extension will connect Stage 1 at the Gold Coast University Hospital to Helensvale station, via Parkwood East and Parkwood. The plan is to open Stage 2, which links five sporting venues, ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Construction will be completed by the middle of next year, with testing set to be carried out during the second half of 2017.
