The Canberra Metro consortium has been awarded the design/build contract for stage one of a new light rail system in Canberra.
The first phase will stretch for 12 kilometres between the city and Gungahlin, and includes 13 stops, 14 trams and a maintenance depot.
Canberra Metro comprises Pacific Partnerships, John Holland, Mitsubishi Corporation, Aberdeen Infrastructure Investments, CPB Contractors, Deutsche Bahn International, CAF and the Bank of Tokyo – Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd.
The contract also includes the maintenance and operation of the network for 20 years.
Work is due to start in the next few months and will be completed by late 2018.
John Holland chief executive Glenn Palin said: “Capital Metro will create enormous opportunity to regenerate the city through the delivery of public transport that supports a growing economy and population. We are proud to be working to connect people to their jobs, homes and services.
He added: “The light rail system will also create and inspire new spaces for the community to enjoy with significantly more green space and a revitalised civic centre.”
