President of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin has attended a ceremony to mark the completion of the Tabriz-Azarshahr electrification project.

Russian Railways has worked in partnership with the Iranian rail sector to electrify the 46km route and five stations along the line.

Yakunin said: “Witnessing the first Iran-Russia joint railway project, I strongly believe it will be a starting point for intensive cooperation between our railroad organisations.”

The route will serve as a transport link for Azarshahr Pedagogic University students.

The Russian-Iranian partnership has set its sights on constructing a direct line between Iran and Russia, via Azerbaijan.
