Casablanca orders new trams for extended network

Listen to this article

Casa Transport has called on Alstom to supply 50 more Citadis trams to operate services on an extension to its light rail network.

Due to open in late 2018, the 22-kilometre extension will capitalise on the popularity of Casablanca’s modern tram network, which has seen ridership increase by more than 30 per cent since it opened in 2012.

The €100 million order is for 50 32-metre long trams which can be run either as single units or in multiples.

Most of the construction and assembly will take place in France apart from the traction system, which will be manufactured in Italy.

The trams will be of a similar design to those already operating in Morocco’s largest city.
