BTP officers believe an object placed deliberately on a rail track in Angus caused the derailment of a CrossCountry service at the weekend.
The front section of the 8.04am passenger service between Edinburgh and Aberdeen came off the tracks at Iverkeilor in Angus on Sunday morning.
Police now believe an object found at the scene was placed there deliberately.
Detective Inspector Kevin McCormack said: “Fortunately, no-one was seriously injured during the incident and we now believe that the object found at the scene of the derailment must have been put there intentionally by someone.”
Officers are working closely with colleagues from Tayside Police and the rail industry to investigate the incident, with additional high-profile patrols taking place in the area.
DI McCormack added: “I am anxious to speak with anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area of Inverkeilor between Saturday night (November 3) and Sunday morning (November 4).”
An incident vehicle remains at the scene, where members of the public can attend with any information they feel may be relevant.
