Brazil rail operator to invest in new EMU fleet

Brazilian regional metro operator Trensurb has issued an invitation to tender for 15 new four-car EMUs.

The project to renew the Porto Alegre operator’s 20-year-old fleet will be funded by the government as part of a an investment package to stimulate the country’s economy.

The successful contractor will have 18 months from signing the contract to deliver the first train and a further eight months to provide the full fleet in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Trensurb has said that preference will also be given to Brazilian products to “stimulate sustainable national development”.

The new trains will have air-conditioning with automatic regulation of temperature, multimedia communication system and panels with a dynamic map of the line.
