Berlin’s BVG orders more IK U-bahn trains

Listen to this article

Berlin’s public transport operator BVG has ordered a further 27 of its next generation IK U-bahn trains.

The €140 million contract comes almost 12 months since BVG placed an initial order for 11 units following a trial of two pre-series trains on the city’s narrow-profile U-bahn system.

The two pre-series trains are now in commercial service and the first 11 units have already been built. Stadler’s factory in Berlin will deliver the first vehicle of the new order in April 2018 and the entire fleet will be in service by the middle of 2019.

The four-car IK series trains have been built using a technique known as “ballooning” to create additional capacity onboard.
