A 20-year project to redevelop Arnhem Central station in the Netherlands has been completed.
At the centre of the €37.5 million regeneration project is a spectacular 21,750 square metre concourse. The complex design of the roof and twisting column had to be constructed with light-weight steel using boat building techniques.
Architect UNStudio was appointed to masterplan the project in 1996. The scheme has been jointly delivered by ProRail, Ballast Nedam, BAM, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Arnhem City Council.
110,000 passengers are expected to use Arnhem Central every day by 2020. Other stations around the Netherlands – Rotterdam, Delft, The Hague, Breda and Utrecht – are undergoing similar redevelopments to cope with this predicted increase in passenger numbers.
