An extension of the Midland Metro to Wolverhampton station has received approval from the UK government.
Secretary of State for Transport Patrick McLoughlin has granted a Transport and Works Act Order, giving the local transport authority, the newly created Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), the powers required to start work on the £18 million scheme.
Preparatory works will now begin on the extension, which will connect the Midland Metro to Wolverhampton’s bus station and railway station.
The extension, which is due to be completed in 2019, is part of a wider project, known as the Wolverhampton Interchange, to redevelop the railway station and its surrounding area.
Councillor Roger Lawrence, who is West Midlands lead on transport as well as leader of City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “Today’s approval is excellent news because the extension can play a key role in unlocking further investment and jobs – not just in Wolverhampton but also other parts of the Black Country.
“If we are to succeed in revitalising our city then we must have the right transport infrastructure in place to open up new areas for redevelopment and underpin our long term ambitions.”
