A record number of passengers have used Amtrak services in the U.S. this year, with one million more people travelling by train in 2012.

Passengers figures were up 4.8 per cent on the Northeast Corridor in the 2012 fiscal year and 4.7 per cent on long-distance services.

Amtrak has set ridership records in nine of the last 10 years.

President and chief executive Joe Boardman said: “Amtrak provides a vital transportation service to this country, often serving as the only intercity travel mode in many of the communities we serve.

“We also benefit hundreds of local economies by supporting jobs, increasing tourism and stimulating economic development.”
