Freight earnings boost for Indian Railways

Indian Railways has posted a 27.38 per cent increase in freight revenue earnings for the first quarter of 2012-13.

Railways earned Rs 210.27 billion from commodity-wise freight traffic during April-June 2012, compared to Rs 165.07 billion during the same period last year.

The company transported 244.81 million tonnes of freight traffic during Q1, against 233.66 million tonnes last year, registering an increase of 11.15 million tonnes (4.77 per cent).

The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) touched 156,269 million in Q1, compared to 154,492 million recorded in the same period last year, showing an increase of 1.15 per cent.

Out of the total earnings of Rs 69.25 billion came from commodity-wise freight traffic during the month of June 2012, that includes, Rs 30.17 billion came from transportation of 39.26 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs 6.72 from 9.61 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user, Rs 6.50 billion from 8.15 million tonnes of cement.

Railways earned Rs 5.27 billion from 3.74 million tonnes of food grains, Rs 4.15 from 3.49 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 4.47 from 2.89 million tonnes of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs 3.38 billion from 3.39 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs 1.30 billion from 1.29 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs 2.96 billion from 3.29 million tonnes by container service and Rs 4.30 billion from 5.32 million tonnes of other goods.
