Once again the Wing Award for Safety resulted in a tie between two major contributors to the field of railway lineside safety.

John Camp, of Cleshar Contract Services Limited wins the award together with Simon Henser of MPI.

The Wing Award for Safety recognises people who make a major contribution to the exacting field of track safety. It is made to an individual who has made an outstanding personal contribution to railway line-side safety.

The award was introduced in 1994 to commemorate the life and work of the late Peter Wing, a Fellow of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers and an employee of British Rail, who during his 31 year career made a major contribution to the cause of line side safety.

Peter dedicated much of his working life to the safety of his colleagues.

It was his care and concern that became the driving force behind the national campaign in 1992/3 that was entitled ‘Dead Serious About Safety’ and which had such a major impact in reducing the numbers of line side fatalities in subsequent years and was the first campaign in the railway to make use of hard-hitting and realistic safety videos.

The IRSE administers the award scheme on behalf of Members of the Railway Group, the Railway Supply Industry and the ORR/HMRI, who amongst others, supported the formation of the Award.

John Camp, HSQE Manager for Cleshar Contract Services Limited was presented with the 2011 Wing Award for Safety by Steve Yianni, Director of Engineering at Network Rail in London.

The Award was in recognition of John’s commitment, contribution and unwavering efforts and enthusiasm in striving for ever higher standards and awareness of safety. John had been nominated by Hugh McAnaw, Director of Rail and Mark Bayes, HSQE Director for his outstanding personal effort and commitment to improving safety on the railway.

This view was endorsed by the judges who selected John as the winner and also recognised the efforts of everyone in the organisation with regards to safety.

“John is a passionate individual whose attitude and drive in promoting the safety culture contributes to the successful outcome of projects,” says Mark Bayes, HSQE Director, Cleshar Contract Services Limited.

“John will always be in the vanguard of initiatives, innovation and awareness and this award recognises the invaluable contribution he has made to Rail Safety.”

MPI Rail Director, Simon Henser, was also presented with his award by Steve Yianni Director of Engineering for Network Rail. Simon has worked for MPI for 15 years, spending the last ten years building the company’s Rail Sector.

In 2007, despite an excellent safety record, MPI was encouraged to develop the safety culture within the company.

Simon rose to the challenge and used his communication skills to great effect. He built up a good rapport with over 350 workers, emphasising that safety is paramount while working on the railway.

This he further conveyed by weekly site visits, attending client’s safety meetings, forums, nightshifts and blockades.

Last year also resulted in a tie.

Joint winners were John Mawby, a Health and Safety Representative from the Ipswich Signalling and Telecomms Group and Dave Deeley, the Infrastructure Maintenance Delivery Manager, Colchester.
