Rail worker hit by Gatwick Express train

A rail worker was hit by a Gatwick Express train in the early hours of this morning.

The man is said to be in a stable condition after being hit by the train whilst working on a section of track.

The man was taken to hospital with ‘multiple life-threatening injuries’ but his condition is thought to now be stable.

The driver of the 05:00 Gatwick Airport to Victoria service reported striking the man near Reedham railway station in Purley.

The RAIB are investigating the incident.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “BTP officers were called to the line near to Reedham rail station on Sunday, 12 June after a man was struck by a train.

“Paramedics from the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) attended and the man, a track worker, was taken to a London hospital.”

Officers are currently working to establish the cause of the unexplained incident and establish the circumstances surrounding it.

Train services were delayed and faced cancellations until approximately 3pm.
