The order to equip 240 cars for Metro Line 1 in Kunming, the capital of the Chinese province of Yunnan, means that Knorr-Bremse will soon be supplying the braking system for its 10,000th metro car in China.

“Today, everyday life in the rapidly expanding cities and metropolises of Asia would be unthinkable without their metro systems providing efficient transportation,” commented Dr Dieter Wilhelm, Executive Board member of Knorr-Bremse AG responsible for the Rail Vehicle Systems division.

“Before long, more than 10,000 metro cars with our braking systems will be in use in China, 7,000 of them in the three major conurbations of Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou alone.”

Knorr-Bremse has maintained close contacts with China since the late 1970s and considers the Chinese market very important.

Its first major project in China came in 1990 and concerned the supply of braking systems for the Shanghai Metro.

Since then, Knorr-Bremse has been able to establish a leading position for itself in the growing Chinese market.

Knorr-Bremse systems are also in service in numerous other metro networks in Chinese cities including Shenzhen, Nanjing, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Shenyang, Suzhou, Dalian and Xi’an.

Through the manufacture and supply of braking, door and HVAC systems, as well as platform screen doors, for many years now Knorr-Bremse has been playing a substantial part in creating a reliable transportation infrastructure across China.

“Given the planned expansion of the local mass transit networks in over 30 Chinese cities, we are anticipating further orders in the metro sector in the medium term,” said Dr. Wilhelm.
