Safety upgrade for level crossing at Dapto, NSW

A $2.3 million upgrade of the level crossing at Avondale Road, Dapto, is now complete, providing greater safety for motorists and pedestrians.

As part of the project, local motorists will now benefit from a wider roadway over the rail level crossing, improved signs and new boom gates to better control traffic.

Pedestrians will also be better protected thanks to new motorised swing-gates, improved street lighting, high visibility LED warning lights and a wheelchair accessible ramp.

RailCorp’s General Manager of Customer Service for the South, George Stojkovski, said the upgrades to lighting and widening of the crossing will improve sight lines for motorists and pedestrians.

“With the upgraded level crossing now open, we’d like to remind customers about the importance of crossing tracks at marked pedestrian railway level crossings,” Mr Stojkovski said.

“There are near misses and fatal accidents at railway level crossings across Australia every year and we are continuing to invest money to keep these crossings safe.”

“Pedestrians must obey the safety signs at rail crossings, stay behind the swing or boom gate, wait until it fully opens and the red lights stop before crossing,” he added.

The level crossing upgrade was jointly coordinated and funded between RailCorp, the RTA and Wollongong City Council.
