Network Rail has awarded J. Murphy & Sons Limited a £2.2 million project to reconstruct three railway overbridges along the Liverpool to Manchester route.

This is the first scheme to be awarded in preparation for the forthcoming electrification of the line.

The line is a 32 mile double track route which runs between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Victoria Stations via Earlestown and Newton Le Willows.

The Department for Transport has identified it for electrification to deliver reduced journey times, use of more efficient rolling stock and environmental benefits.

Under the plans the maximum line speed will be raised to 90 mph, to achieve a target journey time between Liverpool and Manchester of 30 minutes, compared with 44 minutes at present.

To realise the benefits of electrification, a variety of civils works is required where existing infrastructure snags the gauge, including track lowering, jacking of existing decks or complete deck reconstruction.

As principal contractor Murphy will be responsible for the design and build project to reconstruct the first three of a total of twelve overbridges identified for reconstruction along this route.
