Russian Railways release statement regarding their staff in Libya

Russian Railways have announced that at the moment, 204 specialists from the company and its affiliates are working on the construction of a modern high-speed 550km rail line between Sirt and Benghazi in Libya. Due to the current protests in the country, they have issued a statement regarding the safety of its employees.

“The safety of our employees is one of the priorities at Russian Railways. The Company knows the exact location of all its staff abroad, and all of them are safe. We are working closely with Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Russian Embassy in Libya to identify options to ensure the safety of our employees. A special group of Company representatives will fly to Libya in the near future to resolve the situation on the ground,” said Vladimir Yakunin, President of Russian Railways.

The construction of the high-speed line is being carried out by Russian Railways for Libyan Railways. The contract is worth €2.2 billion. Along with the construction of the line, the project involves the construction of a gauge along the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea, 6 major stations and overpasses for both trains and cars.
