The Heathrow Commuter team have scooped the 2011 London Transport Award for Excellence in Travel Information and Marketing for their campaign to promote staff usage of the Heathrow Connect rail service.

The annual awards reward innovative transport initiatives which are making positive changes for transport users in the capital.

Winners typically include local authorities, companies and organisations which have made a real difference to the lives of Londoners. In winning the award, the Heathrow team saw off competition from Transport for London, the Docklands Light Railway and four London boroughs.

Heathrow Commuter helps 76,000 employees across 367 companies at the airport to choose a more cost effective and environmentally friendly way to travel to work.

The awards entry focussed on the team’s efforts in securing and marketing 75% staff discounts on Heathrow Connect, which has led to a doubling in the number of employees using the rail service.

Heathrow’s Sustainable Travel Manager, Theo Panayi said:

“We’re thrilled to win this award but we’re even more pleased with the success of our campaign, which is making a real difference to the lives of airport staff. We’re taking cars off the road and helping Heathrow workers save money by switching to public transport. Our programme will go from strength to strength and this award is just the start.”

The airport staff discount is also now available from all stations on the line between Reading and Hayes & Harlington, as well as branch lines to Henley, Marlow and Greenford.
