Campaign for Better Transport and the Railway Industry Association are hosting a roundtable discussion on the future of rail on Monday 12 June to mark the first day of Better Transport Week.

Better by Train: a vision for the future of rail, will feature guest speakers Elaine Seagriff, Director of Strategy and Planning, Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT); Darren Caplan, Chief Executive, Railway Industry Association; Hannah Moxon, Director of External Affairs, Rail Partners; Andrew Murphy, Head of Sustainability, Eurostar; Jonathan Chatfield, Head of Railway Strategy and Policy, Rail Delivery Group; and Jools Townsend, Chief Executive, Community Rail Network.

The roundtable is part of Better Transport Week, which runs from 12 to 18 June, and aims to promote the wide range of benefits of public transport, shared mobility, walking and cycling to the public and encourage more people to travel sustainably.

The week-long celebration of sustainable transport has been launched by Campaign for Better Transport to celebrate its 50th year of campaigning with the Railway Industry Association one of the week’s official partners.

Norman Baker from Campaign for Better Transport said: “The need for an affordable, well-connected and reliable railway has never been more urgent. As the rail network enters into a new era post-Covid, this roundtable will be an opportunity to hear from rail industry insiders on what they see as the future for rail.”

Darren Caplan, Chief Executive, Railway Industry Association, said: “Rail travel has returned strongly since Covid, with passenger numbers now regularly exceeding pre-pandemic levels every day of the week and freight having recovered some time ago. This roundtable comes at an opportune time, as we discuss how to harness that return to rail and ensure that the railway industry continues to grow in the future. We are proud to be hosting this event, alongside Campaign for Better Transport.”

Better Transport Week is being supported by a large number of organisations and features a different theme each day. Monday 12 June is rail day and the roundtable follows the public launch of the week by rail minister Huw Merriman at Kings Cross Station in London.
