WSP, the engineering professional services consultancy, is set to continue its role as Industry Systems Integrator (ISI) for the Wales & Western (W&W) Region.

Reappointed by Network Rail for the third consecutive time since 2014, WSP will continue integrating the delivery of major station refurbishments, capacity improvements and infrastructure renewals across the W&W Region over the next three years.

As ISI, WSP has so far played a key role in introducing electrification and bi-mode rolling stock to the Greater West programme. With the successful completion of this complex programme, WSP’s focus will be turned to various projects within the W&W Region to support local ambitions for growth.

As well as better connectivity and greater rail capacity, these ambitions include providing societal benefits to the local areas, from new housing and job creation, to new enterprise districts and, in Greater Bristol, a new university campus.

The ISI team provides strong and consistent collaboration with multiple stakeholders. WSP will continue working closely with the DfT, Network Rail, Train Operating Companies, Freight Operating Companies, passenger groups, Office of Rail and Road, local authorities and other third parties towards a shared vision.

Mark Burton, Head of ISI for Network Rail, said:“We’re looking forward to continuing our relationship with WSP in this important role for the region. Whilst the Greater West programme delivered a huge amount of scope across the region, there are still key areas that need integration to realise benefits for local areas, their economic growth and the passengers.”

WSP will continue to apply its proven, benefits-focused systems integration approach to ensure joined-up, programme-wide thinking that addresses future challenges. The application of initiatives such as SPEED and the newly introduced PACE (Project Acceleration in a Controlled Environment) process will provide the opportunity to find further efficiencies.

Zoe Dobell, ISI Project Manager at WSP, said:“We are delighted to continue working closely with Network Rail and other stakeholders on the ambitious challenges that the railway and local authorities always strive for.

“As we embrace the new PACE process, combined with a robust systems integration approach, the ISI team has the potential to further expedite project delivery and bring about passenger benefits sooner still.”
