VolkerRail has received the Green Business of the Year Award for its commitment to environmental responsibility, at the 22nd annual Doncaster Business Awards.

The Doncaster Business Awards, hosted by Doncaster Chambers, are the most prestigious awards in the region – and the largest business awards in Yorkshire. The awards celebrate the very best of Doncaster’s business community, recognising the high calibre of work being delivered by organisations across the borough and beyond.

This is the first time the Chamber has presented a Green Business of the Year Award, having introduced the category for the first time in 2020, to recognise those who have a clear and demonstrable strategy for their efforts and achievements in environmental responsibility.

The judges selected VolkerRail, having seen the benefits created for its customers, communities and the wider environment through its Group’s Sustainability Framework – People, Planet & Purpose – and how projects continue to meet the highest environmental standards in a highly regulated sector, through initiatives such as the use of 100% green electricity, engaging in local community activities, local recruitment and vocational opportunities, and supporting charitable activities related to the ‘greener’ issues of industry.

The judges also praised VolkerRail’s environmental team for having extensive staff knowledge and a clear passion for doing things right – and continuous improvement.

Katherine Haigh, head of environment and sustainability at VolkerRail, said: “This has been a true team effort. Over the last two years our team has grown, and through its expansion we have welcomed new members who each bring added expertise, ambition and enthusiasm to improve the way we work.

“We collaborate across our organisation, with our clients and supply chain partners, to design and construct rail infrastructure projects that protect and enhance the natural environment, focusing on adopting circular economy principles, reducing carbon, and biodiversity. Bringing this focus into our schools’ engagement, volunteering and charitable work multiplies the positive impact we can make in the communities where we work.”
